Figures show that France was not alone in suffering a significantly increased mortality rate during a period that saw temperatures regularly exceed 30C.
The Office for National Statistics said there were 907 more deaths in Britain in the week to Aug 15 than has been normal for the past five years.
In the week to Aug 8, there were 78 more deaths than is usual for the period.
